July 21, 2003 -- LAST Wednesday, there was a mob scene in Otto Tootsi Plohound store in SoHo - literally. One minute, there were a handful of shoppers browsing the spacious Italian footwear shop at the corner of Lafayette and Prince streets - the next, hundreds of people were swarming in the door, milling about like a hive of caffeinated bees.

Just me being 'me' .... but what an outstanding opportunity for some people to decide to change the 'mob' into an opportuntity to shoplift. Thus, when some people see others stealing, the mob will change from just a 'joke' to a mobile crime spree. Think of the store trying to stop a few hundred customers, each of whom has decided to walk off with merchanidise. Each member 'unknown' by others; and the whole mob dispersing without motive, cause or provocation before the police arrive.

Would you consider subletting?

Too many people with no purpose in life. This sounds like a Seinfeld episode. Maybe these folks could be drafted by the greens and forced to sit in trees in Central Park.

This is straight out of the stories and novels of Bruce Sterling.

"Deep Eddy", "Bicycle Repairman", "Maneko Neki" and Distraction (all by Sterling) have similar events.

One is planned for Thursday.

I hope it's planned for City Hall Park - to coincide with the bars and restaurant employees and owners protest against the stat e and city smoking bans.

The Cacophony Society has been doing stuff like this - only far more inventive - in a number of cities for years. These losers are twenty years late to the party and not particularly inventive.

Would you consider subletting?

Can you fit in the trunk? If yes, then yes.
